This customer manages investment portfolios made up of several individual
accounts within a household (i.e. IRAs, 401(k)s, money market accounts,
etc.) But his trade-specific software program was set-up to look at one
investment account at a time. He needed a way to present his clients with
a summary of the combined accounts in their household, as well as a tool to
assess how the money was diversified across all the accounts.
Solution:
A custom Excel workbook was created that allows him to easily import the
current data from each investment account. The imported data is
automatically summarized in several ways, including a summary that can be
presented to clients to show the status of their investments across all of
their accounts. The workbook also includes a sophisticated tool to
automatically calculate divergence from that client's ideal
diversification, suggest appropriate trades to re-balance to that ideal
diversification, and allow the customer to analyze the result of different
trading options to re-balance the accounts to match the targeted
diversification. Once he decides on the best trades to make to re-balance
the household accounts, the workbook prepares trade worksheets he can use
to execute those trades appropriately.
