The customer had a spreadsheet used to track sales (quantities and amounts of various items sold) that had some discrepancies in the totals numbers. The customer wasn't sure how to find the source of the discrepancies and wanted an expert opinion.

The source of the discrepancies the customer was noticing was pinpointed. Slight changes to the spreadsheet's formulas and formatting were made in order to avoid such discrepancies in the future. Problem:

This customer manages investment portfolios made up of several individual accounts within a household (i.e. IRAs, 401(k)s, money market accounts, etc.) But his trade-specific software program was set-up to look at one investment account at a time. He needed a way to present his clients with a summary of the combined accounts in their household, as well as a tool to assess how the money was diversified across all the accounts.

Solution:

A custom Excel workbook was created that allows him to easily import the current data from each investment account. The imported data is automatically summarized in several ways, including a summary that can be presented to clients to show the status of their investments across all of their accounts. The workbook also includes a sophisticated tool to automatically calculate divergence from that client's ideal diversification, suggest appropriate trades to re-balance to that ideal diversification, and allow the customer to analyze the result of different trading options to re-balance the accounts to match the targeted diversification. Once he decides on the best trades to make to re-balance the household accounts, the workbook prepares trade worksheets he can use to execute those trades appropriately.
